YoungArchitect

As I have traversed through my career as both a student and architect, I have made many mistakes and, in doing so, learned many lessons along the way. I often wondered what I would do if I had known what was coming my way. Would I have done anything diferently or would I have avoided certain aspects of the industry altogether?

Well that is where YoungArchitect comes in. This site is a sort of guide of what you need to know and expect about the architecture profession to make you life a little easier. Through my experiences, I have gained many opinions about the architecture industry and how young architects become engaged. While the writing will be mostly my opinion, the site is primarily a medium for the rest of you to comment and write about your own experiences and opinions.

About the Author

My name is Marc Joseph and I am a practicing architect in Santa Monica, CA. I graduated in 2004 and moved to NYC right after graduation. There I worked in both large and small firms on a wide array of projects. In this past year, I moved to California for a lifestyle change; the Manhattan winters were getting to me. My particular area of expertise is in high-rise housing and I hope to continue to work in residential projects at some capacity.

It is important to note that architecture is only a small part of my life. Other than practicing and writing about architecture, I am also interested in finance, real estate, web publishing, and trying to keep my gut from showing through my shirt. I am engaged to my college sweetheart…a woman I was in studio with for five years. I am very much into sports and have been known to fake sick to watch or attend sporting events.

I’m just shy of Junior Standing at UCLA. I really didn’t know what I wanted to do when I first got to school and spent years bouncing between majors and taking sabaticals to work and travel. In January I applied to the undergraduate major program at UCLA (and have completed my GE requirements). I won’t find out if I got into their program for another month or so and wouldn’t begin coursework until the fall (except for a 6 week intensive program that I’m taking this summer where I will take my first two studio classes). Right now I’m just working as a bartender and cater waiter on the weekends but would really like to get an internship with an architecture or even interior design, construction or any related firm to get some experience.

What would be your advice in terms of where to look and how to pursue getting such an internship considering that I have no experience with AutoCAD, have never taken any studio or design classes. What I do have is project management experience, significant office, logistics and sales (of all types ranging from house painting, high end fitness equipment and commodities like apples) experience. I’m also willing to work hard and learn anything they need for cheap (maybe free).

I have decided that architecture is the field that I want to work in and if I don’t get accepted to UCLA’s undergrad program I will be taking the year to take night school and work (hopefully in a related industry) while I reapply to UCLA and other schools (for undergrad).

I am a 1st year Architecture student at Arizona State. I am trying to get an Internship in Southern Cal where I am from. Can you offer me any advise on the best practical approach to landing the job and getting the most out of the experience?
