Carole, a loyal reader, wrote me an e-mail about an issue that many of us have experience in.
“As a young interior designer, I appreciate any advice I can get. In this
particular case, I have been given a black market copy of CAD by my cousin an
architect out of San Francisco…. My question is how hard is it really to
teach yourself to use this program? And what advice do you have, as in should I
buy a manual or should I just tinker with the program?
“I’m making an effort to expand my skill set and I think being proficient in cad
is the best way to get started

While working on our most recent deadline in the office, I came across one of those “Been There, Done That” moments.
One of the young interns just out of school plotted a whole set of PDF’s and forgot to change the old date to the current date on the title block. Just as he was about to go home for the night, he realized his mistake. Not only did he have to remake all of the PDFs, but he had to plot all the new drawings out for the meeting the next morning just because of this one stupid mistake. I thought to myself “Everyone has to learn the hard way.”
This got me thinking:
What are your “Been There, Done That” moments?
- What are the things that every young architect, or even every young professional does?
- What are the lessons that you had to learn the hard way?
- Or, what may be even more entertaining, what are the bonehead moves that you have made either in school or in your career that are almost too embarrassing to admit?

In my search for interesting architectural content, I came across a few items that were of particular interest. The following four articles are all of inhabitable spaces in very weird places.
Click on the Pictures to bring up the original articles:
This was actually in last weeks Friday posting but it is a prime example of architecture in unorthodox conditions. Having been to aquariums with walkways similar, I can understand how dizzying these spaces can be. I couldn’t imagine what the experience of eating there would be like.
In this example, I cannot figure out how they got all the accessories (lights, silverware, machinery, etc…) to stay in place while the cargo box is closed up. Click the link to see more images.

These two images are in fact the same thing. Someone took your typical RV to the next level and converted a garbage truck into a fully functioning living space.
Now this is just a little insane if you ask me. In China, they don’t have “eminent domain” and therefor, developers must buy out all of the tenants in order to secure every parcel of land. This couple is holding out for better or for worse. The only question is, how do you live there? How do you get even the most basic things like food? Are their any water or power lines hooked up?
