Post image for Post an Ad

Freelancing might be a very viable option, even if you are still employed. Take your first step by posting an ad for your services in the classifieds.

The worst thing that can happen here is that no one calls. On the positive side, this one ad could be the beginning of your own private practice.

Here are ideas of places to post an ad:

  • Craiglist
  • Elance
  • Local Newspaper
  • Local Church
  • Local Hardware Store (Home Depot or Lowes)
  • Local Farmers Market
  • E-mail friends and business associates to let them know.

As I write this, I realize that the more local that you can get, or the more concentrated you can become on a specific group of people, the better your chances of success. As architects, designers or even engineers, the more you can grow your relationships with your clients, the better the chance that they will refer you to their friends. Think of places where people might need your services, like home depot, and target them with your ads.

Don’t include a rate as your rate may change by project. However, the hourly rate you should eventually charge should be no less than what you make per hour at your day job.

If any readers know of any other places to advertise, please post in the comments at the end of the post.
