Today, I would like to share with you a website that I came across a few months ago. the site is called How To Architect and is run by Doug Patt, a residential architect, entrepreneur, and artist.
The website is more like a vlog, where Doug creates video series centered around specific themes: such as:
- Taking Products To Market
- Could You Be An Architect
- So U Want 2 B An Architect
- The Path Of The Architect
- What Should Be In Your Toolbox
- And Much More
The reason why I like the How To Architect site, is that the videos are really well produced. It is very apparent that Doug has taken the time out to craft the videos and has expertly edited them. I have wasted hours watching his content.
Who Is It For?
Doug has targeted architecture students and those that are thinking about entering the architecture profession. His material offers a lot of introductory information and advice about the life of an architect.
I personally like what Doug is doing because he has incorporated entrepreneurship as an outlet in addition to his career as a residential architect.
Premium Content
How To Architect also has a video series that you have to pay to watch called The Vault. My recommendation is that you watch most of his free content first. You can go to Doug’s site or to his YouTube Channel.

Am I the only one with an absolute abhorrence of the use of the word architect as a verb? Architects don’t architect, they design.
But wouldn’t “How to Design” be less specific?
How can it be less specific when you’re dealing with a word being used improperly to start? I know newer dictionaries have actually adopted the verb usage because of the software people, but I still cringe every time I see it. Maybe I’m just a grumpy old fart. Next thing I’ll be telling people to get off my lawn.
I get your point Steve. Grumpy Old Fart’s are welcome here. But I do understand your frustration with the misuse of the term “architect.” I see it used far too often and its meaning has stretched to encompass many things. I wrote an article about the term a while back. I should see if I can dig it up and post it soon.
