Update Your Materials

Whether you are gainfully employed or not, you should always be keeping your resume, portfolio and other related documents current. In doing so, you won’t need to panic to get all of your materials ready to go job hunting.

I recently wrote about this in Career Guide: Getting Started series so I won’t go into too much detail in this post.

The only additional thing I would like to add here is that you should take home a set of drawings (11 x 17 or 18 x 24) from whatever big project you are working on today. If you were already laid off, see if someone that is still currently working at your old office can get you a half-size copy of the drawings (buy them a beer or take them out to lunch for their trouble). This is so critical because the working drawings from actual projects that you have worked on are the most valuable piece you can bring to an interview. They not only will give the employer a sense of your skill-set but they will also have something to talk with you about in the interview besides glossy images of theoretical projects that most portfolios are filled with. Also, the drawings are so important to attain because they are something that you cannot easily produce from your home office.

ACTION:

  • Steal a working set of drawings from your office; they can be slightly outdated and not in use anymore.
  • Update your resume
  • Compile images of recent projects to add to your portfolio.
  • Total Time (1.5 hours)
