I recently had a moment of reflection whereby I assessed what YoungArchitect’s place would be in the online architecture community. I realized that recently I had gone astray from my original intent of this site and I wasn’t supplying you, the reader, with much quality content.
What is Wrong with YoungArchitect?
The basic problem that I have been having with my content is that I have been trying to please my whole audience. I really haven’t been throwing my opinions and experiences out there fully enough. I have been scared of alienating the few readers that I do have so far.
Another problem is that I have been way too concerned with imagery.I had a professor that once said:
“The reason why I have always loved to study Architecture is because it is full of picture books.”
I was basically trying to give you a lot of eye candy instead of just doing what I want to do which is write about the actual experience of being a young practicing architect.
The third thing that is wrong with YoungArchtiect is that the internet is already filled with great architecture content! It’s true, though I was not aware of this at first. There are many blogs on the net that offer all the latest news and images of new projects on the architecture scene (you can see some of them on my blogroll on the sidebar). I didn’t know about most of these sites when I first started YoungArchitect and I am happy to regularly follow these sites now that I have discovered them. So I don’t need to be re-posting projects that I am finding on other people’s sites. Instead I can just send you over there to take a look for yourself.
The New Look
So I am going back to Plan A. I am changing the format and I will be writing pieces with much more of my own personal experiences and opinions integrated into them. I will not be trying to write to please everyone but rather to provoke. Here’s what to expect:
-
I will be writing pretty exclusively about the trials that young architects go through throughout school and the early years in the profession. These are things that I obviously have had experiences in and I have many pointed opinions about a lot of it.
-
I will also provide some interviews I have lined up with people in and around the architecture industry. These interviews will profile professionals experiences and thoughts about architecture and may delve into the potential for what is to come in the future of architecture.
-
I will also continue my “Friday Fix” segment in order to promote some of the content on the other blogs I mentioned earlier. I will be highlighting the content that I feel is either innovative or important. Basically things I like.
-
I will write until I can at least get all of my opinions and experience out to the users. I just want to get my own ideas out in the open.
-
I will continue to encourage an atmosphere of discussion and banter as I expect most people who read this site from now on will have their own opinions on the subjects.
